I am often asked where my name comes from. People think it is eastern European. But it is in fact Scots Gaelic. So far as I know it should be pronounced with a soft 'O' as in sofa. But as my parents didn't know this until much later. So my pronunciation is as in sovereign. Though I answer to both.
My sister chose it. While my mother was pregnant with me my older sister Erica as being read The Daughters of Aradale by Elinor Lyon. Part of a series of children's adventure books set on the west coast of Scotland; featuring Ian and Sovra and later Cathy.
I enjoyed reading them later on too. I think I was drawn to them far more than other children's adventure books because the female characters are strong.
Elinor Lyon was a fairly prolific writer. Not all the children's books were set in Scotland. One of my favourites is Rider's Rock which is set in Wales. Read more about her in Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elinor_Lyon
